Cantium Limited was established in 2018 as an independent consulting firm that specialises in sustainable/development finance and markets. Since inception it has been involved in a diverse range of projects with corporates, financial institutions, development banks and technology start-ups. Cantium works internationally and to date has been engaged with clients in the UK, USA, Mexico, South Africa and Indonesia.
Chris McHugh is the Director of Cantium Limited. He also acts as a Senior Advisor to the International Association of Credit Portfolio Managers (IACPM), a Research Affiliate of the Center for Analytical Finance at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is affiliated to the University of Southampton as adjunct faculty. The common thread through this portfolio of work is the mobilization of private capital in support of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement, and the mechanics of sustainable finance markets. He has 24 years’ experience in financial markets. As a Managing Director at HSBC for 14 years he ran derivative trading and structuring teams responsible for the risk management of: Counterparty Risk (‘XVA’), Funding and Collateral Discounting risk; Energy Derivatives; Emerging Market Credit; and Foreign Exchange derivatives. Prior to that he worked in Markets at Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank, and at Merrill Lynch in Investment Banking.
Before starting his research at Southampton he founded the Centre for Sustainable Finance at The London Institute of Banking & Finance and as a faculty member lectured on derivatives, risk management and sustainability. He has also taught at both Cambridge Judge Business School and Oxford University. Chris graduated from King’s College, Cambridge, with a degree in Engineering, has an MBA from London Business School and a PhD from the University of Southampton.
